Are the uses of Immanuel in the Book of Isaiah and Emmanuel in the Book of Matthew the same or distinctively different? Are these two the same or distinctively different? It can be confusing. Both Immanuel and Emmanuel are found in the Bible. The New Testament is originally recorded in Greek. Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel Isaiah KJV.
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us Matthew KJV. With the original text of the Bible not being in English, it must be translated.
Emmanuel, God with us, changes everything. John encapsulates the promise of Emmanuel without actually using the term. God, the creator of the universe, is with you. On your best days, your worst days, in every moment of your life, Emmanuel.
He picked the rundown one, the dangerous one, the one that everyone else avoided. God is with you, even if you grew up on the wrong side of the tracks. I want to dive a little deeper into this because I think it will help us better understand Emmanuel.
They were often defeated and enslaved. From the Syrians to the Persians, and even Alexander the Great, they all had a turn in conquering and ruling over Israel. But by far, the worst was Antiochus IV Epiphanies. He overtook the temple and worshiped foreign Gods, forced priests, by penalty of death, to eat pork an unclean animal , and performed sadistic reverse circumcisions. And most notoriously, he entered the Holy of Holies which is bad enough and sacrificed a pig on the altar.
The Jews had enough and eventually, they led a revolt that overthrew him, but their freedom was short-lived. Soon Rome marched in and squashed their rebellion and conquered Israel once more. When he heard of a new king that had been born in Bethlehem, he ordered all infant boys under 2 to be slaughtered. This is the place, the neighborhood, that Jesus moved into. A place with a broken past, a grieving present, and an uncertain future. This is God with us. I think we often have this picture that God wants us to clean up our lives before we come to him.
But Emmanuel shows us a different picture. Immanuel explains how God came for us, is here with us, and is coming back for us through Jesus. Jesus appeased the ardent anticipation of our hearts. The questions have been answered. The gaps have been filled. Hope is available for the world to receive. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret. In a world where everyone has access to us, it can be a blessing to go unnoticed.
