San Elijo , the beach in front of the campground, is open for day use and is ideal for families. Pipes is a fun peaky surf break north of the campground, popular with swimmers, sunbathers and surfers alike. Cardiff Reef is a quaint beach park and surf spot on the south end of the campground where the cliffs end. Parking You can park at any of the designated lots, but be sure to purchase a parking pass, available at the ranger station at Cardiff State Beach camping grounds.

Street parking along Highway is free but can be a busy stretch of Interstate. Lifeguards Lifeguard stands are staffed seasonally depending on weather conditions and the number of beach patrons. During spring and summer months, lifeguards are active and available. Popular Activities Surfing, paddle boarding, boogie boarding.

Body surfing and swimming allowed in designated areas. Snorkeling and scuba diving. Spear fishing. Take a right onto Chesterfield Dr. The site offers swimming, surfing and beachcombing.

Dogs are permitted on Cardiff State Beach. Beach Wheelchairs are now available for patron use. Check out the wheelchair with a photo identification at the San Elijo State Beach Campground entrance. There is no fee charged for the use of the wheelchair.

It is available on a first come, first served basis. During the summer season, a Mobi Mat is placed at Lifeguard Tower 15 to provide a firm access surface to the mean high tide line. Wintertime is also your best bet for riding a short board here. Spring: As the water warms up, the waves begin to die down. Still a good bet. Separately, a fish or fun shaped board is also a popular choice for surfing Cardiff Reef. Like I mentioned above, Cardiff Reef is a gentle, even keeled wave so having a board with a bit more float is helpful. The unfortunate thing about good waves in San Diego is that they come with large crowds.
