This is a timely reminder that the things you say on the internet don't exist in a vacuum, that artists and band members are real people, and it costs nothing to not be a dick. After three months of unrelenting criticism and bullying being thrown their way from Christian fans, Underoath's Spencer Chamberlain and Aaron Gillespie have posted an incredibly frank and honest video, talking about their position on Christianity.
In the short video, Underoath frontman Spencer opens up about his treatment by the Christian community around his addiction problems, and how he was alienated by the community when he needed help most. They were putting out magazines about me being a drug addict and stuff. Watch the full video below:. This is just the tipping point, with both Spencer and Aaron having been on the receiving end of a never-ending parade of Christian vitriol for the past three months.
In April, Underoath released their first new album since their 'Disambiguation', and since then have been in the firing line from their fans with criticism on their position on Christianity.
For context, Underoath and the members of Underoath have openly called themselves Christian in the past- even going as far as to declare the band a Christian band. However with the release of their new album 'Erase Me'- the band's first album to feature any profanity, fans have been taking to twitter and instagram to openly berate the members of the band for their apparent change in theological position.
Aaron noted the Africans, who are so poor and needy, worship God just because He exists. But I got caught up with everything that was going on and I kinda wasted my influence. After so many years of touring with Underoath, Aaron says it had become more about what was in it for him. This worship tour, Aaron says is different. Aaron does. He spoke while preparing for an outdoor acoustic set in Corpus Christi, Texas. I love it, the people the traveling.
It is just time for me to go. We began as a sort of progressive-metalish type band. I just knew i was young and had an incredible opportunity to play as fast as i could, which was super fun. He just believes that God wants him to do something different now.
